Does your combi boiler turn on and off when the hot water's running? 08/02/2012

Well, this week I faced this problem and diagnosed that the plate heat exchanger (PHE) had become scaled up.
This is caused by the cold water passing through the boiler, being heated, and then depositing limescale on the heat exchanger.
The best way to solve this problem is to replace the PHE, but this can be expensive.
The other option is to have the PHE flushed out.
This involves a special pump/flushing sytem and some quality descaling chemical.
This particular boiler is now running like new again, and and

Ok, so with a new month comes a brand new property maintenance project, in Bushey, Hertfordshire. Its a four bedroom detached house that is being renovated top to bottom. AMPHS's role in this property maintenance project will be to decorate throughout, bathroom design, bathroom installation, tiling and laying laminate flooring throughout the house.
I'll be posting progress and pictures as we go, and look forward to meeting the client's month-end deadline.

Cold, Wet and Damp....Condensation can be damaging 26/01/2012

This morning I went to see a flat that had some terible condensation damage.
This is basically caused when the air contains a disproportionate amount of moisture, humidity, and it comes into contact with a surface that is below a certain temperature, dew point.

In this instance, it is a large, north facing wall, with two large windows. The best way to tackle a situation like this is to increase the thermal insulation of the cold surface, increase ventilation of the area, and try to reduce the ratio of water in the air.
It is really important to remove all mould residue, as this will have unwanted effects on respiratory problems and general healthcare.

            New toilet in Borehamwood... 24/01/2012

Met my favourite customer of the year today! A lovely lady, who unfortunately lost her dad the other day.
Her uncle is redoing her bathroom and toilet for her, but not being a fan of plumbing, she asked me to come and pull out the old toilet, with its antiquated boxing, and fit a nice new one for her.
Job all done, and another satisfied customer.
Really hope she has some hap

An interesting one in Finchley.... 23/01/2012

Today, I Went to see a property, in Finchely Central, where the boiler was refusing to work.
Turns out, when the customer had bled the radiators, the gravity fed system wasn't refilling.
Simple enough so far.....or is it?
The f&e tank is stuck in a completely inaccessible space above the flat.
So, with my 'thinking outside the box' hat on, I installed a semi-permanent filling loop between the cold mains and the flow pipe in the airing cupboard. This then allowed me to top up the system from the bottom. The customer is now warm and cosy, and I'm off to swap a toilet in Borehamwood

Well, another bathroom fitted, another customer seemingly happy!
A lovely new white suite, with a great square-ended shower bath and fixed glass screen.
An additional toilet means the new bathroom has added some good value to the property, and the new vanity/basin unit, some much needed extra storage.
